The NAVYA ARMA Officially Begins Service on the Roads of MCity Today

(Ann Arbor) December 9, 2016 – NAVYA, a pioneer in developing and manufacturing autonomous vehicles in Europe, today announced it has joined forces with the University of Michigan’s Mobility Transformation Center (MTC) to bring the first NAVYA ARMA, 100% driverless, completely electric autonomous shuttle vehicle to the United States with a launch event today at Mcity, the University of Michigan’s world renowned research center and proving ground for autonomous vehicles.

The NAVYA ARMA took its inaugural run this morning demonstrating the vehicle for media and officials in attendance at Mcity for the launch event, which marked the first NAVYA vehicle service in the United States. The ARMA will serve as both Mcity tour shuttle and MTC research platform, establishing a partnership between NAVYA and MTC. The main objectives of the partnership are to continue both groups’ research efforts with the collective goal of perfecting technologies linked to autonomous vehicles. NAVYA is providing MTC with the ARMA shuttle and all the services that go with it (maintenance and supervision) while the MTC and will become an affiliate member of the U-M Mobility Transformation Center (MTC), the public-private partnership that operates Mcity. NAVYA will also participate in TechLab at Mcity, an incubator for mobility startups managed by Michigan Engineering’s Center for Entrepreneurship and MTC.

During the ceremony commemorating the CEO of NAVYA, the Deputy Director of Mcity, the University of Michigan Vice President of Research all provided comment on the partnership and the significance of the day for the future of autonomous vehicles in the region and the country.

NAVYA CEO Christophe Sapet commented, “This is a landmark day for NAVYA. While we have had great success deploying our systems all over the world, this represents the first NAVYA ARMA vehicle operating full-time in North America; one of the largest future markets for AVs. Mcity is a great partner and Michigan the perfect place to deploy a first NAVYA ARMA. We expect expansion in North America to be broad and decisive in the coming months.”

The ARMA’s capabilities are perfectly suited for a broad variety of public and private sites requiring efficient, convenient and safe first and last mile transportation. The shuttle will be operating on the streets and parkways of Mcity. Launched in 2015 by the University of Michigan, Mcity is a 32-acre mock city made up of a network of streets and roads specifically designed for testing autonomous cars. This is a major opportunity for the French specialist in smart mobility, NAVYA, which is expecting to supply local authorities and private sites in the U.S. with its smart mobility solution.

As part of the initiative, NAVYA plans to organize demonstrations in different cities across the country in an effort to grow the Lyon, France-based company in the United States. By the way, the NAVYA-MTC vehicle will be in January presented in Las Vegas, at the CES, the largest high tech event. Indeed, during the show, the visitors will be able to experience the 100% autonomous NAVYA ARMA on track!

NAVYA ARMA is a safe, reliable and comfortable 100% autonomous, driverless and electric public transport vehicle that can carry up to 15 people. It has been designed to ensure the specific functions of an autonomous vehicle while optimizing navigation and safety. The shuttle is equipped with a multitude of sensor technology to provide 3D vision which enables it to map out the environment, detect obstacles in its path and identify traffic and road signs. The NAVYA ARMA shuttle can reach speeds of 28miles/hr. However taking into account the nature of the sites it often serves, this is often limited to 15 miles/hr . The vehicle aims to provide a complement to current public transport systems over distances that are too short to go by car or are too long on foot.

NAVYA, created in 2014, is a French company specialising in developing innovative, smart and sustainable mobility solutions. NAVYA develops driverless, automated electric vehicles that are independent of all infrastructure. These vehicles are designed for the intelligent transport of people and goods.

In October 2015, NAVYA launches the NAVYA ARMA, a 100% autonomous, driverless and electric shuttle which can transport up to 15 people and which is now operating on different sites: private sites and public roads.

The vehicle is equipped with numerous sensors and an on-board computing system that enables it to interact with its surroundings. It is also intended to provide efficient mobility solutions in terms of space and energy. NAVYA benefits from major advances in technology in the autonomous, electric vehicle sector thanks to its experience in the field and a highly qualified R&D team. Christophe Sapet, its CEO, is supported by a team of 70 people divided up between Lyon and Paris.

October 2016 saw NAVYA’s shareholders unanimously approve a raise in capital of 30 million euros. French groups VALEO and KEOLIS and the Qatari GROUP8 acquired a stake in the company alongside GRAVITATION and CAPDECISIF MANAGEMENT, who joined in 2015 and ROBOLUTION CAPITAL, the original investor.
