Two Ohio WWII Veterans awarded the French Legion of Honor

On July 9, Consul General Yannick Tagand officially presented the French Legion of Honor medal to Ohio WWII Veterans Leonard GIORGIO, 98, of Wadsworth and Walter B. STITT, 97, of Springfield for their participation in the liberation of France during WWII.

The ceremony took place at the MAPS Air Museum in North Clinton near Akron, in the presence of Major General Deborah Ashenhurst, U.S. Army (Ret), Director of the Ohio Department of Veterans Services, Tammy Puff, U.S. Army Veteran and Liaison to the Military and Veterans for Governor Mike DeWine of Ohio, David K. Root, Past President of the Ohio Department of the Veterans of the Foreign Wars, Cedric Le Rouge, Honorary Consul of France for Northern Ohio.

PFC Leonard GIORGIO of Wadsworth (OH) entered into active service on May 13, 1943. He was assigned to Headquarters Company, 180th Infantry Regiment, 2nd battalion, 45th Infantry Division and served as a Radioman/Infantryman.
He participated in 4 major campaigns: Rome-Arno (Italy), Southern France, Rhineland (Vosges, Alsace) and Central Europe.
He was honorably discharged on January 1st, 1946. Following WWII, Mr. GIORGIO joined the U.S Naval Reserve and achieved retired Reserve status as a Lieutenant on July 1st, 1970.

CPL Walter B. STITT of Springfield (OH), entered into active service on March 27, 1943. He was assigned to the Company E, 33rd Armored Regiment, 3rd Armored Division and served as a Tank Gunner.
He participates in 4 major campaigns: Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. He was wounded in action on September 19, 1944 in Germany and on January 6, 1945 in Belgium. Afternoon recovery from his wounds he was reassigned to the 211th AAF Base Unit of the 95th Bomb Group in England.
He was honorably discharged on November 30th, 1945.
