Powathan Point (OH) WWII Veteran receives the French Legion of Honor

On September 11th, 2024, Consul General Tagand presented the prestigious French Legion of Honor medal to WWII Veteran Joseph E. Binni, 101, in Powathan Point, Ohio.

The ceremony took place at the American Legion Post, in the presence of Belmont County Commissioner Jerry Echemann, Service Commissioner Secretary Bob Wallace, Powathan Point Mayor Jeffrey Haught, and many friends and family members.

During the war, Mr. Binni served in the 264th Field Artillery Battalion as a communications specialist and radio operator. During the campaigns of Northern France, the Rhineland, the Ardennes and Central Europe, he was in charge of setting up wires and lines, and making sure communications were operational at all times between the firing batteries, the units on the front line, the headquarters, as well as the air observation groups who provided enemy positions and directed artillery fires.

Mr. Binni was honorably discharged from the US Army in December 1945 with the rank of Sergeant.
